Language Arts - A literature-based, integrated program published by Houghton Mifflin is utilized.
- Reading program stresses comprehension, vocabulary development, word analysis, and author's point of view, drawing conclusions, making inferences and predictions
- Novels emphasize various literary techniques: description, alliteration, simile, foreshadowing, metaphor, etc.
- Novels vary, but currently include: Chasing Vermeer, Sign of the Beaver, Tuck Everlasting, and A Wrinkle in Time
- Study of different genres of literature through novels
- Oral reports, presentations, and plays
- Dictionary skills
- Writing experiences in different literary forms: descriptive essay, persuasive, compare/contrast, expository, a fifth grade memory, poetry, etc.
- Study skills: graphic organizers, note taking, flashcards, etc.
- Research skills - after researching, write essays and reports for science and social studies; produce a research report
- Complete the writing process on essays - pre-writing, revising, proofreading, and publishing
- Write and present book reports
- Parts of speech, paragraphing, topic sentences, agreement of subject and verb, usage, etc.
Mathematics - The following concepts and skills are reinforced:
- Mastery of multiplication algorithms
- Mastery of two digit divisor division, introduction of three digit
- Mastery of fractions - addition and subtraction with an introduction to multiplication
- Operations with decimals
- Standard and metric measurement, geometry, probability, estimation, statistics, graphing, and practical application of word problems
Science
- Process Skills
- Health: nutrition, disease prevention and control, drug and substance abuse (DARE), personal health, and disability awareness
- Simple Machines: types and practical application;
- Force and motion
- Electricity: types and effects of circuits; static and current
- Magnets: types and effects
- Water Cycle: instruments (barometer, thermometer, anemometer, and rain gauge), cloud type (cirrus, cumulus, and stratus), major weather phenomena
- Astronomy: solar system, major constellations, lunar cycle, and eclipses (solar and lunar)
Social Studies
- Map Skills: Longitude, latitude, scale, measurement, etc.; U.S. states and capitals; Major U.S. land forms; Major U.S. waterways
- United States History (1600-1900): Colonization, Revolutionary War, Constitution, Civil War, Industrialization, and Immigration; U.S. Government Structure - branches in government

- Economics: Resources, Barter, Money, Wants/Needs, and Limited/Unlimited
