Special School District is a countywide school district encompassing St. Louis County which provides for the special educational needs of children with diagnosed disabilities. The students are referred by the school staff or by their parents. Special School District conducts an in-depth parent interview, extensive intelligence, language and academic tests, as well as behavioral observations. If a student qualifies for special education services, an appropriate diagnosis is made. Once a diagnosis is made, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is written with input from a team which includes parents and school personnel.
Resource Room
The Special School District Resource Room at Conway School is designed to serve students with a diagnosed disability. A student with an IEP may receive direct or indirect serves form a Special School District resource teacher. The resource teacher collaborates extensively with the student's classroom teacher to provide support and additional instruction, teach strategies, and make necessary curricular modifications or adaptations to facilitate each student's growth and academic success in the general education curriculum as identified on their respective IEP.
Speech-Language-Hearing
This program is designed to serve students who require special education services in the areas of articulation, voice, fluency, language, and/or hearing (as it relates to speech/language difficulties). The severity of the communication disorder and/or the academic problem is the main determinant for the frequency and form of service provided as part of a child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Classroom modifications and accommodations can also be included in the IEP if the team feels they are needed in order for the child to meet with success. Speech and language screenings are available to students if a teacher feels that a student may have speech and /or language concerns.
Occupational and Physical Therapy/Adapted P.E.
Skills addressed in the areas of Occupational Therapy in cooperation with the school team include fine motor skills, visual-perceptual motor skills, self-care skills, and school-related gross motor skills. Skills addressed in the area of Physical Therapy include building accessibility, range of motion, and body strength as well as the ability to maneuver safely on playground equipment. Adapted Physical Educational can also be provided for students with disabilities to afford them the opportunity to successfully participate in physical activities along with their peers.
These programs are related services that may be provided for students who have been diagnosed with a primary educational disability. An evaluation for these services may be completed following a recommendation from the IEP team or as part of a diagnostic evaluation by Special School District. If services are recommended, a program is implemented that will help students attain their educational potential by helping them compensate, adapt, and function within the physical environment of the school setting. Delivery of these related services is distinctly different from medically based services. Services are provided in cooperation with the school team.
