"Why are there so many songs about rainbows?" asks Kermit the Frog in "The Muppets" movie. We made a "Rainbow Connection" of kindness and displayed it in March and April. The focus was simple: to notice and do some random acts of kindness for others...just because. We started by showing a video clip from a Liberty Mutual ad depicting kindness and passing it on. Then the students wrote down something kind that they had done or that someone had done for them ("I held the door open for someone." "I drew a picture for someone who was feeling down." "I invited someone to play with us at recess."). The rainbow grew and grew as kindness spread!
Snowball Effect of Fairness and Responsibility" For the month of January, students learned about being fair and responsible. Each class defined fairness and responsibility and talked about ways that they show these attributes both at home and at school. Each student was given a paper snowball, and encouraged to write or draw about a time they acted fairly or responsibly, or ways that they can be fair or responsible in the future. Each class got to decide how to arrange their snowballs in order to display them for the school. We ended up with some very creative designs! When all of the class snow pictures are up on the wall, it shows that each fair and responsible act "snowballs" create a strong Conway community! Make sure to check out our wonderful snowball display to see all of the ways that Conway students know how to be fair and responsible!
"Webs of Safety" For the month of October students discussed being safe. Each grade focused on a specific area of the school. Every classroom at Conway discussed what it means to be safe. Students also talked about what SAFE people do and how they behave. Each student received a spider leg to write a way to stay safe according to his or her grade level location. Kindergarten students discussed safety at recess. First grade students talked about being safe in the cafeteria. Second grade students discussed what safety looks like in their classrooms. Third grade students discussed safety in the hallways. Fourth grade students conversed about what safe students should do on the buses. Fifth grade students in 5-M discussed how to be safe in the library. Fifth grade students in 5-S talked about safety in the art room. Fifth grade students in 5-D discussed how to be safe in the music room. Students and teachers attached eight legs to each spider's body. Then the spiders were placed by the correct grade level webs outside the cafeteria. It was exciting to see students become more aware of safety throughout Conway School! Please take a look at all the neat spiders and ideas students posted outside the cafeteria. Be careful! You might also get caught in our “Webs of Safety”!
September's Character Education Activity Building a "Wall of Kindness" For the month of September, we focused on being kind to one another. Students chose secret “Kindness Partners" and throughout the week, they were extra kind/nice to that person. For example, children might have picked up their partner’s pencil, shared colored pencils, or complimented a great idea. Later in the week, students tried to guess their kindness partners. If a student was kind to several classmates, it was more challenging for their “Kindness Partner” to pick them. Next, students wrote something kind about their partner and created a brick for that person. The bricks were placed on the “Wall of Kindness” that was located outside of the cafeteria. By the end of the month, a kind statement was posted on the wall for every student at Conway. Some classrooms continued with additional "Kindness Partners." It was amazing to watch the kindness spread throughout Conway! Way to go, Conway students!
