Conway School is proud to report the successful implementation of foreign language. Recent brain research has supported the benefits associated with second language acquisition before the age of ten. To ensure continuity of instruction in the foreign language program Spanish was chosen for instruction. Developmentally, Spanish is the preferred language due to its ease in spelling, pronunciation, sound replication, phonetic characteristics, and transferability. Conway's ultimate goal in providing elementary foreign language is to provide opportunities to attain a high level of fluency in the chosen foreign language. The Symtalk (symbol-talk) Method was chosen to achieve this goal. The method is highly interactive; students take ownership of their language learning and have success from the beginning of instruction. The elementary foreign language curriculum, with Symtalk at its core, aligns with the Missouri Foreign Language Standards and the goals of the Missouri Show-Me Standards. The curriculum includes the instruction of proficient communication skills, understanding of other cultures, connections to other disciplines, language comparisons, and community enrichment.
