Conway School has the services of one counselor who is employed full-time to work with students, parents, and staff. The services are based on the four program components of the Missouri Comprehensive Guidance program: curriculum, responsive services, individual planning and system support.
Curriculum
A district guidance curriculum is established every three years after families and students complete a needs survey. Once community needs are identified, district counselors prepare and develop lessons to meet those needs. The needs survey is based on state guidance grade level expectations.
Responsive Services
This component of the counseling program is designed to support the individual needs of students. This part of the counseling program may include: new student groups, consultations with parents and teachers, personal and small group counseling, such as Peace Tables, family transition and change, crisis counseling, and referrals to our district social worker and psychologist.
Individual Planning
At the elementary level, these activities are initiated by the counselor, teachers, or parents and consist of planning for and monitoring the learning and personal development of individual students. Most of the planning involves decision-making by adults and focuses on meeting exceptional needs.
System Support
This part of the guidance program is designed to help the school community run smoothly. The counselor might manage or assist with activities such as: coordinating the building testing program, acting as building liaison for special education referrals, diagnostic conferences and individual education plans, assisting in curriculum planning and research, and handling other duties as designated by the building principal.
