Conway School is staffed with a full time registered nurse. Our school nurse is an integral part of the educational process. She assists children in developing to their full potential in health and education. While the major responsibility for teaching children is assumed by the instructional staff, the school nurse provides supportive professional and specialized health services for the staff and students. She functions in an expanded role with standing orders and protocols from physicians, thus enabling better management of illness and injury in the school setting. Included in her job description are the following duties:

• applies appropriate theory as a basis for decision making in nursing practice;
• collects information about the health and developmental status of the student in a systematic and continuous manner;
• uses data collected about the health and developmental status of the student to determine a nursing diagnosis;
• develops individual health care plans for students with special needs;
• intervenes as guided by the nursing care plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness, and affect rehabilitation;
• collaborates with other professionals in planning to assure quality of health care provided to students;
• assists students, families, and school personnel to achieve optimal levels of wellness through a variety of health education programs each year;
• assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional development and contributes to the professional growth of others.
