PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Mrs. Ann Chapin • Mr. Neil Theriault

Health/Physical Education is an ongoing process that begins in early childhood and continues throughout life. Physical education is taught daily in all grades. Students in all grades, K-5 receive 30 minutes of instruction every day. Health maintenance and personal wellness skills as well as the functions and interrelationships of the body systems are included at every grade level. Jump Rope for Heart is one activity that incorporates health and fitness skills. Rhythmic activities, fitness, and racquet sports are examples of the many units taught with an emphasis on developing fine, gross, and sensory motor skills. Students may also receive instruction in kick-boxing, tae kwon do or other areas from a guest instructor. These classes also emphasize self-control and respect. Each school year, students are assessed using the Fitnessgram program. This program measures: Aerobic Capacity, Upper Body Strength and Endurance, Abdominal Strength and Endurance, and Flexibility. Furthermore, Conway's annual Field Day focuses on teamwork and sportsmanship.

Physical education classes are differentiated by utilizing readiness, interest, and learning profile. For example, a volleyball activity may be divided into three teaching areas. "Clinic" areas assist students in further developing their skills with individualized attention, a "casual game area" permits students to focus on specific skills needed for the game, and a "game play" area challenges students to incorporate their skills into a real game situation.

As an outcome of Conway's brain research study, our physical education teachers also teach classroom teachers "attention grabbers" to revitalize student attention and focus during classroom instruction. The activities are quick, simple ways to increase the heart rate, to empower the brain, and to provide a transition between learning activities. Conway teachers have found that this short break refocuses student attention for continued learning.
