In seventh grade social studies we study the economic, social, political and religious aspects of civilizations in the Middle Ages. We also study the key concepts of geography, mapping and archeology as they arise in the curriculum. This year we will study the Fall of Rome, the Rise of Islam, African Kingdoms, Imperial China, Feudal Japan, Middle Ages in Europe, Renaissance, Reformation and the Mayans, Aztecs and Incas. Middle Ages Established Goals:Students will understand that during the period known as the Middle Ages, Europe was redefined socially, politically, and culturally in response to crisis and disorder; the new look of Europe impacted its interaction with the rest of the world.

Essential Questions ---------------------------------------------------------------------------Students will Understand

•What events can cause disarray in a society?

•With no central government after the Collapse of the Roman Empire people felt vulnerable;

•People felt threatened by the spread of a new religion;

•The bubonic plague spread rampantly through the streets of Europe leaving society crippled

•What steps and measures will people take to to survive in times of crisis?

•Because people looked to monasteries to provide some basic needs during the Middle Ages of Europe, religious awareness and endeavors began to dominate the society

•Charlemagne provided a sense of unity and after his death feudalism evolved as a source of security and protection so people were able to overlook negative aspects

•What can monumental religious architecture as well as other structures reflect about a culture?

•During the Middle Ages of Europe, life centered around the Manor and the many monasteries, castles, and cathedrals that covered the landscape represent all that was important to Europeans

•How do you control or limit people and institutions that have gained too much power?

•America as a nation is founded on ideas of limiting the power of kings and breaking the controls of religion that began in Europe

•What reasons do humans give for invasion/ expansion and can any good result?

•Europeans justified their many years of waging wars on Muslims by calling them “Holy”; the end result was the restoration of trade, communication and cultural exchange which, in turn, indirectly led to Europeans expanding into “the New World.”
