Art.....
is an adventure into one’s imagination!
The art program at reed school concentrates on the creative side of the child’s nature. skill building lessons based on the elements and principles of design are essential and an integral part of the art program. They are the necessary prelude to creative expression in which children learn techniques that will improve their visual communication.
The students at reed are exposed to a wide variety of media and experiences, both two and three dimensional. while pencils, crayons, paint and clay are the ‘basic’ tool, students are also introduced to many other expressive possibilities working with oil pastels, plastercraft, wood, metal tooling, and various textiles. Papyrus paper, chinese brush painting, bamboo brushes, rice paper are examples of ‘authentic materials’ used in projects of a multicultural nature. The use and development of technology skills is also integrated in the art curriculum via computers, photography and video presentations.
Field trips to art exhibits at the saint louis art museum, laumeier sculpture park, marianist galleries, the saint louis artists’ guild, contemporary art museum, the pulitzer foundation for the arts and the missouri botanical gardens are integrated into the curriculum with appropriately related ‘hands on’ activities coordinated in the classroom art studio.
